Gary Galante Medical Education Dossier

Welcome to my educator's portfolio. I invite you to navigate through the accumulation of work and reflections which highlight my role as a medical educator. As a Gastroenterologist at the Alberta Children's Hospital, my clinical work is centered around providing inpatient care and consultations on a busy clinical teaching service, surrounded by learners of varying levels of training. Outside of my clinical work, I have maintained an active interest in postgraduate medical education through my role as an academic half-day instructor for several residency programs, and my ongoing participation on residency training committees. My involvement in undergraduate medical education has been primarily targeted at paediatric clerkship, previously having assumed a large role in seminar instruction while training at the University of Alberta, and currently completing a research project assessing a flipped classroom format adapted to academic half-day education during paediatric clerkship at the University of Calgary.

Additionally, I have been involved at a national level in developing practice examinations for paediatric residents, and in co-authouring paediatric chapters of OSCE (objective structured clinical examination) preparation texts. I have also previously edited and contributed to Pedscases, an innovative source of pediatric knowledge dissemination designed and led by medical students, and maintain a supervisory role as an Alumni member. I also look forward to more opportunities for involvement as a member of the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) professional education committee. I am also thrilled to be wrapping up my Master of Education in Health Sciences Education program and its associated scholarly activities, in particular having developed skills in curriculum design, program evaluation, student assessment, as well as the design and implementation of innovative educational technologies.

Through this portfolio, I hope to provide insight into my personal views and expressions of medical teaching and learning, and to outline my past, present, and future as a medical educator.

How to Navigate My Portfolio

This portfolio is divided up into major areas as related to my role as an educator, with similar organization to a teaching dossier.

In Approach to Teaching, you will find my teaching philosophy, as well as self-reflection on former and currently used teaching and assessment methods. Relevant examples will be alluded to, and elaborated further as I highlight my Teaching Contributions. Such contributions will be explored through elaboration of my various teaching responsibilities that will subsequently be summarized as a log, my mentoring activities, followed by activities and work undertaken to improve teaching, learning, and assessment. I have chosen to group a variety of activities in this section, where I have demonstrated initiative in curriculum development, learner assessment, continuing education, and research projects, as well as through committee service related to education. Publications and curriculum materials are also found in this section.

Assessment and documentation of my teaching competency follows, divided into student and faculty/peer feedback, as well as teaching awards that I have been fortunate enough to receive. As personal reflection is an important aspect of this portfolio, I will attempt to evaluate some of my strengths and weaknesses as an educator with specific examples and future plans. In addition, reflective comments will be incorporated throughout the portfolio. Using the navigation menu in the heading at the top of the screen, and associated buttons that link from the pages and subpages to specific areas, I invite you to peruse these sections as you learn about me as an educator.
